Weekend Salvage Trade Meeting in Cumbria

Material recovery for flooded Lake District

With all the usual suspects, the evening dinner hosted by Clive and Pamela Wilson (WRS) at the Cavendish Hotel Cartmel for Salvo, was elevated by the attendance of Dan Hill from Tiger Enterprises who had travelled to the flooded areas of the Lake District to advise on material recovery. Specifically, Dan was helping local people to set up Reuse Centres for salvageable recovered goods, damaged by the flooding of the previous week.

Insurers could benefit from our industry’s expertise

It was great to witness the enthusiasm of Dan and his brother Ryan in their determination to be positive in the face of desperate and, what for many, would be overwhelming odds.

They were busy persuading others that, in a week or two, the salvaged building materials set aside could be a valuable resource in the recovery process. Perhaps insurance companies would benefit from expert technical advisors from within the reclamation industry acting to demonstrate best practice for higher recovery levels of materials.

Dan (pictured) said it was very sad to see so much material just being skipped for speed, rather than a little forethought to encourage recovery.

Trade Association RITA: Reclamation Industry Trade Association

New national trade association is born

After years of frustrated effort a broadly based group of established dealers assembled in Worplesdon to found a national trade association. The working title R.I.T.A. (Reclamation Industry Trade Association) was adopted, together with a Government approved constitution. Steve Tomlin (MASCo) was elected its first Chairman. Kate Jarrold (Robert Mills Ltd) its founder Honorary Secretary.

The following were elected to act as an Executive Committee to support the officers for the forthcoming year:

Justin Miles-Booy (JMB)     Arc Reclamation Ltd

Steve Horler (SH)                   Frome Reclamation Ltd

Peter Watson (PW)                 Cox’s Architectural Salvage Yard

Daniel Hill (DH)                       Tiger Enterprise Ltd

Fiona Triplow  (FT)                Old Radiator Co

Andy Triplow (AT)                 Old Radiator Co

Kevin Harris (KH)                   MASCo

Colin Scull (CS)                        Robert Mills Ltd

Launch date planned for March 2010

The  issues and policy of the Trade Association were discussed in a three hour meeting and the Executive agreed to research the various items considered and receive reports and proposals to be adopted at their next meeting on January 14th at the Worplesdon Hotel 10am nr Guildford.

The Executive determined to give itself time before formally launching in March 2010.

Preference for reclaim

During the next two months, the new committee will establish the direction and policy of the Association, intending to give  preferential  emphasis to the trade dealing in reclaimed architectural materials and antiques.

Objectives & Membership

The Executive will issue a formal statement of their objectives after the January14th 2010 meeting, from which date membership will be open via application to the Secretary (Kate Jarrold).

Sustainability as an optional extra?

The RICS survey

Interesting corporate reporting shows that China and Brazil are taking Sustainability more seriously than USA and others, according to the RICS survey.

Why, whenever you get a group of business people together of any stature, do they quickly boast their sustainability consciousness and then quickly add the rider, usually as an under their breath  aside, some pejorative about it being a drag on commerce (again adding …”don’t quote me, of course!” ).

Speak out and grasp real sustainability

If our captains of industry think sustainability is optional and an inconvenience, tolerated for political correctness, then let them have the courage to be open and say so publicly. Their reluctance to lift their heads above the parapet is cowardly and damaging to industry if they are correct.

If, as most people increasingly believe, we confront a global problem of enormous magnitude that has to be addressed with urgency and resources, then our leaders of commerce need to understand they are blindly leading us into an environmental cataclysm if they fail to grasp real sustainability.

Surely they understand that these are the alternatives and they are either failing to provide leadership or are placing commercial self interest above what they should know needs to be done.

Sustainability = Common Sense Management

MASCo Sustainability has demonstrated repeatedly that sustainability represents the highest levels of efficiency and commercial effectiveness. Our clients have discovered, albeit reluctantly or belatedly, that they can make better profits from sustainable management of resources and materials. Many of our proposals and recommendations can be seen as commonsensical, but you would never believe how many companies fail to see the obvious and whose management do not understand what’s  happening in the workplace.

Commercial confidentiality prevents naming and shaming, but the evidence of profligate waste, poor planning and the failure to integrate management thinking we have well documented  for future reference.

Before it is too late, corporations and the wider  business community need to address Sustainability with vigour and sincere commitment.

We have “forgiven” or chosen to defer our anger with failed bankers….this time, we need to establish that the right to make profit is a two sided privilege that carries responsibility that cannot be waived if things go badly wrong next time.

Neil Carmichael visits MASCo

A visit from prospective parliamentary candidate, Neil Carmichael

We were pleased to welcome to the MASCo yard the Conservative Party candidate for Stroud, Gloucestershire. Neil took a genuine interest in our sustainability projects, locally and around the country, and he was able to see first hand the derivation of this important arm of MASCo’s business.

In these photos, Neil Carmichael is given a tour of the showrooms by MASCo directors Steve Tomlin and Debbie Kedge, and General Manager, Kevin Harris.

The finished Arts & Crafts gazebo

The finished article: Kelmscott gazebo recreated in Sapperton

True to our word (and you can check that in our 4 November blog post here) the Arts & Crafts gazebo has taken a month to complete. It’s hard to believe this garden existed without it.

A stunning vista on crisp winter mornings; imagine what it will look like in late spring / early summer…

If you have an idea for something special for your garden or home, we’d be delighted to hear from you: please get in touch.

Arts and Crafts alive and well in the Cotswolds

Good clients, Mary and Antony Haynes, walked into the MASCo yard one month ago and said, “We want a gazebo exactly the same as the William Morris one at Kelmscott Manor“.

Straight forward enough, really!

So, thanks to Mike Mitchell and Neil Gardiner, the job was completed within one month of planning consent using all traditional materials supplied and sourced by MASCo.
